Produced by Benanti, a pioneering estate founded in 1988 by Giuseppe Benanti and now led by his sons Antonio and Salvino, the 2021 Contrada Monte Serra Rosso Etna DOC is a pure Nerello Mascalese sourced from the estate's vineyards in Contrada Monte Serra, located on the southeastern slope of Mount Etna within the municipality of Viagrande, at an elevation of 450 meters. This single-vineyard site features ancient bush-trained vines, some over 100 years old, planted in sandy, mineral-rich volcanic soils interspersed with pumice stones, which impart distinctive concentration and finesse. Hand-harvested in late September or early October, the grapes undergo full destemming followed by maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures for approximately 21 days, utilizing indigenous Etna yeasts selected by the winery. The wine then ages for 12 months in French oak tonneaux, followed by additional time in stainless steel and 10 months in bottle, reflecting Benanti's dedication to sustainable viticulture and the revival of Etna's native varieties, resulting in a wine that captures the volcano's unique mineral expression and the 2021 vintage's balance of freshness and depth.
