Baked Plums, Exotic Eastern Spices, Leather, and Legendary Bekaa Valley Soul

The 2019 Château Musar Gaston Hochar is an evocative, world-renowned Lebanese icon crafted in the high-altitude Bekaa Valley. Blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan from low-yielding, mature vines, it unfurls exotic aromas of dried cherries, baked plums, incense, sweet tobacco, and leather. Medium-to-full-bodied and velvety, it carries rich spiced fruit over warm, fine-grained tannins and natural freshness, culminating in a distinctive, savory, and remarkably lingering finish.

Terroir & Winemaking Philosophy

  • The High-Altitude Bekaa Valley Terroir: Sourced from bush vines averaging over 40 years of age located in the southern Bekaa Valley, near the villages of Aana and Kefraya. Situated at an elevation of roughly 1,000 meters above sea level, the vineyards are sheltered between the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon mountain ranges on gravelly limestone and calcareous soils. The intense Mediterranean sun is tempered by chilly mountain nights, allowing slow, phenolic ripening with pristine natural acidity.
  • The Legendary Hochar Method: Created by Gaston Hochar in 1930 and immortalized by Serge Hochar, Chateau Musar follows a natural, patient regime. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan (approx. equal thirds) ferment spontaneously in cement vats. After roughly six months, the components spend one year in French Nevers oak barriques before blending into cement and bottling unfined and unfiltered in the third year. The bottles are then rested in the dark cellars of Ghazir for an additional four years, releasing only when ready after seven years.

Highlights

  • Roughly equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan from old bush vines.
  • Farmed organically at 1,000m altitude; aged 7 full years before commercial release.
  • A balanced, structured 2019 vintage built for extraordinary longevity over 20 to 30+ years.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby with warm garnet reflections, it opens with pure, multidimensional aromas of baked red plums, dried cranberries, and fig paste, layered with incense, sweet pipe tobacco, worn leather, cloves, and wild scrubland herbs. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, velvety, and complex, delivering spiced red and dark fruit supported by fine, seamless tannins and a fresh vein of mountain acidity, culminating in an expansive, savory, and delicately earthy mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 17–19°C in wide Bordeaux stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 1.5 to 2 hours prior to serving to allow its complex tertiary spices and reductive cellar notes to harmonize. Prime drinking window 2026 through 2050+.
