Cassis, Violets, Crushed Granite, and Pure Northern Rhône Finesse

The 2023 J.L. Chave Sélection "Offerus" is a vibrant, mineral-laced Saint-Joseph red. Crafted by master blender Jean-Louis Chave, it delivers fragrant aromas of ripe cassis, dark cherries, cracked pepper, violets, and crushed stone. Medium-bodied and tensile, it wraps fresh dark fruit in fine, architectural tannins and mouth-watering acidity, finishing clean, savory, and beautifully focused.

Highlights

  • 100% Syrah crafted by Jean-Louis Chave, blending estate-grown fruit from around their Mauves headquarters with fruit from trusted partner growers.
  • Sourced from steep, south and southeast-facing terraced vineyards across the historic heart of Saint-Joseph (Mauves, Tournon, and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols).
  • Planted on decomposed granite bedrock, delivering unmistakable flinty graphite minerality, lifted violet floral perfumes, and energetic acidity.
  • Matured for 16 to 18 months in large neutral French oak demi-muids and seasoned barriques, completely avoiding new oak to preserve naked terroir transparency.
  • From the balanced, classical 2023 Rhône vintage; drinking well now with structure to develop across 2025 through 2035+.

Tasting Notes

Bright, deep ruby-red with violet hues, it opens with pure, lifted aromas of cassis, dark cherries, and wild black raspberries, seamlessly woven with freshly cracked black pepper, dried violets, graphite, and crushed granite stone. The palate is medium-bodied, tensile, and beautifully balanced, framing vibrant dark berry fruit against textbook fine-grained tannins and crisp, integrated acidity, culminating in a clean, savory, and mineral-laced finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in standard Syrah or generous red wine stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 30 to 45 minutes prior to serving to let its granite-derived minerality, pepper, and fresh floral notes fully open up. Best enjoyed now through 2035+.
