Grand Curoulet is one of the best terroirs in Arbois, a north-facing slope overlooking Arbois and the Saône plain, historically linked to the first vines planted in Arbois. The vineyard was replanted in 2015 with 2/3 Savagnin and 1/3 Chardonnay, but this cuvée is made from 100% Savagnin. The soil is composed of gray marl and variegated (green and red) marl from the Trias period, giving the wine notable mineral character. Fermentation occurs in foudres and barrels, with one-third of the harvest macerating with skins overnight before pressing. Aging is in 500-liter barrels without new oak, and the wine is biodynamic.
Tasting Notes
The 2019 shows summer flowers, orange peel, sweet blossom, mango, and a touch of exotic lychee. Other notes highlight lime leaf, verbena, white tea, Sicilian lemon, and a faint hint of lychee, woven together by fresh, fine acidity. The palate is rich yet taut, with surprising acidity, a burst of flavor, and a long, echoing finish seasoned with fine sea salt. It is described as the most accomplished non-oxidative Savagnin at Domaine du Pélican.
