Ripe Black Raspberries, Provencal Garrigue, Crushed Stones, and Julien Barrot’s Grenache Finesse

The 2020 Domaine La Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an opulent, seamless Southern Rhône masterwork crafted by Julien Barrot. Dominated by centenarian Grenache vines, it reveals an explosive bouquet of black raspberries, dark cherries, lavender, wild thyme, and cracked black pepper. Full-bodied, velvety, and supple, it wraps decadent fruit around ultra-fine, chalky tannins and refreshing Mediterranean vitality, concluding with an expansive, spicy, and mineral-lifted finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 96 pts
Wine Advocate 93 pts
  • 96 Points - James Suckling: Although this smells of baked black fruits, it is all the other aromas that make it so amazing: hot dry earth, grilled bread, Mediterranean herbs and a whole range of spices. Even better, it has wonderful vitality on the very concentrated palate, thanks to the beautifully crafted tannin structure. What fascinating complexity and energy at the very sensual finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.
  • 93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: Mixed cherries and berries, hints of roses and garrigue and a touch of dark chocolate may be found on the nose of the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Julien Barrot, a fine example of this estate's main bottling. Full-bodied and supple, it finishes long and softly dusty. Already approachable, it should continue to drink well for more than a decade. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
  • Century-Old Vines & Diverse Lieu-Dits: Sourced from prime parcels across Châteauneuf-du-Pape, including Grand Pierre, Rayas, and Palestor. A significant proportion of the blend originates from centenarian Grenache vines planted on sandy slopes mixed with red clay, rolled quartzite pebbles (*galets roulés*), and soft sandstone, creating a rare balance of power, delicate floral perfume, and fine-grained texture.
  • Julien Barrot’s Non-Interventionist Craft: Directed by vigneron Julien Barrot, the estate vinifies with spontaneous ambient-yeast fermentation in tulip-shaped concrete vats. Matured for approximately 18 months in a combination of old neutral oak foudres and concrete without new oak, the wine highlights the unmasked terroir expression, natural vitality, and ethereal silkiness of pristine Grenache.

Highlights

  • Grenache-dominant blend (roughly 65% Grenache, with Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault, and Clairette) from old-vine parcels.
  • Aged entirely in neutral large foudres and concrete vats to preserve purity and aromatic lift.
  • From the balanced, expressive 2020 Southern Rhône vintage; drinking beautifully now through 2038+.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-crimson in color, it opens with pure, exuberant aromas of black raspberries, dark cherries, and wild strawberries, intertwined with provencal garrigue (rosemary, thyme, lavender), licorice, and crushed pepper. The palate is full-bodied, supple, and velvety, wrapping generous dark berry fruit over ultra-fine, chalky tannins and fresh natural acidity, culminating in an expansive, savory, and mineral-lifted finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in large Rhône or Burgundy glassware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 1 hour to allow the complex garrigue and floral nuances to fully blossom. Best enjoyed from now through 2038+.
