Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Robert Parker [96-98] pts
- 96-98 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon was tasted as a finished blend barrel sample. Deep purple-black in color, it delivers fantastically pure blackcurrants and fresh blackberries scents, with wafts of crushed rocks, lavender, clove oil and cinnamon stick, plus a hint of mossy bark. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm, finely grained texture to support the ripe, rich, juicy fruit, offset by amazing freshness and energy, finishing long and layered."
- The Singular Terroir: Tucked into the foothills of the Palisades range in northern Napa Valley, the Eisele Vineyard spans an alluvial fan dominated by volcanic gravel, cobbles, and stones. This exceptionally well-drained soil limits vine vigor naturally, yielding small berries with intense skins and an unmistakable ink-and-iron minerality.
- Biodynamic Purity under French Guidance: Managed by Latour-owner François Pinault’s Artémis Domaines since 2013, the property relies completely on certified biodynamic farming methods. This focus on natural soil ecology allows the winemaking team to extract high native definition and stunning aromatic precision from the site.
Highlights
- A highly exclusive, low-production release of 100% estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon from the historic Eisele Vineyard.
- 100% certified organic and biodynamic viticulture managed under elite French-led technical guidance.
- Aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels to frame and integrate the immense material weight of the harvest.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep, opaque ink ruby red with dark crimson margins.
- Nose: Intensely concentrated and brooding, opening with upfront aromas of blackberry liqueur, cassis, and crushed volcanic stones, layered over secondary elements of graphite, espresso grounds, dried sage, and warm wood spices.
- Palate: Strictly bone-dry and full-bodied. The entry is broad, deep, and heavily extracted, carrying dense layers of baked black orchard fruits. The mid-palate shows a powerful structural core where thick, chewy tannins and integrated acidity ground the warm-vintage depth, leading into a long, muscular, and smoky finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at standard room temperature (17–18°C). Keeping it controlled prevents the powerful, extracted alcohol framework from overwhelming the underlying fruit layers.
- Decanting: Given the tight, muscular tannic framework of this small-yielding vintage, a 2-hour decant is highly recommended before serving. This structure is built to integrate further and develop in the cellar over the next 15–20 years.
- Western Pairing: Prime dry-aged ribeye steak, slow-braised beef cheeks, roasted venison loin with dark berry reductions, or pepper-crusted lamb chops.
- Asian Pairing: Slow-braised pork belly (東坡肉), wok-fried premium beef cubes with black pepper, or slow-cooked brisket in rich five-spice broth.
