Crafted by Escarpment Vineyard, founded in 1998 by Larry and Sue McKenna, Robert and Mem Kirby in Martinborough, the 2022 Pinot Noir is a pure Pinot Noir sourced from premium vineyards across the district, with 75% from the Te Muna Road subregion. These sites, located at elevations of 50-150 meters, feature alluvial gravel soils that impart elegance and structure. Hand-harvested grapes are fermented with 24% whole clusters in open-top fermenters, with minimal intervention and daily plunging for gentle extraction, followed by 11 months of aging in French oak barriques (27% new) and 9 months in stainless steel before bottling without fining or filtration. This sustainable approach captures the 2022 vintage’s balance of ripe fruit and freshness, resulting in a wine that reflects Martinborough’s cool-climate terroir and Escarpment’s Burgundian-inspired philosophy.

Tasting Notes

This Pinot Noir displays a bright ruby hue with aromas of cherry, raspberry, and red fruit, accented by fresh earth, orange rind, and bay leaf. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and juicy, offering flavors of red berries, cedar, and subtle spice, supported by powdery tannins, bright acidity, and a long, savory finish.
