Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 95 Points - James Suckling: Stunning nose with very ripe aromas of pomegranate, orange and blackberry with a ton of smoke. Excellent concentration, but it is the brilliance that this is married to that makes the wine stand out. Extremely long and precise finish with great mineral freshness. A cuvee of 80% syrah and 20% viognier, co-fermented. Partly matured in large oak foudre and partly in barrique. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.
- The Côte Blonde Granite Terroir: Sourced primarily from steep, terraced south- and southeast-facing slopes within the Côte Blonde in Ampuis. Unlike the darker schist of the Côte Brune, the soils here are composed of pale arzel (decomposed mica-schist and granitic sand), which naturally yields Syrah of immense aromatic lift, seductive perfume, and filigreed, velvety tannins.
- Christine Vernay’s Masterful Touch: Crafted by Christine Vernay, who brought the same legendary precision her family pioneered in Condrieu to Côte-Rôtie. Co-fermenting approximately 95% Syrah with 5% Viognier using indigenous yeasts, the wine matures for up to 24 months in French oak barrels (around 25% new), capturing classic Côte-Rôtie grace without overt oak weight.
Highlights
- Co-fermented blend of roughly 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier from terraced Côte Blonde parcels.
- Crafted with certified organic viticulture by the iconic Domaine Georges Vernay.
- From the stellar 2020 Northern Rhône vintage; prime drinking window 2025 through 2038+.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple with violet highlights, it opens with pure, intoxicating aromas of black raspberries, dark cherries, and fresh violet blossoms, interwoven with crushed black pepper, smoked bacon, dried herbs, and pulverized granite. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, silky, and elegantly concentrated, enveloping dark bramble fruit in a framework of ultrafine, chalky tannins and vibrant natural freshness, culminating in a persistent, savory, and mineral-lifted finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in large Syrah or Bordeaux stemware.
- Decanting: Decant for 1 hour to allow the floral Viognier lift and complex granitic undertones to fully unfurl. Best enjoyed from 2025 through 2038+.
