Eocene Flint Minerality, Citrus Brightness, and Old-Vine Sancerre Finesse

The 2023 Henri Bourgeois Sancerre Blanc "ES-56" (formerly known as La Bourgeoise) is an exceptionally concentrated, stony, and refined Loire Valley white wine. Named "ES-56" in honor of the 56-million-year-old Eocene flint terroir of Saint-Satur, it opens with bright aromas of lemons, peach pits, white blossoms, gunflint, and subtle nutmeg spice. The palate is medium-bodied and compact, balancing vibrant citrus fruit and subtle wood integration with mouth-watering mineral precision.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 92 pts
  • 92 Points - James Suckling: Lemons, peach pits, white flowers and nutmeg on the nose of this stony, minerally white. It’s medium-bodied and compact. Drink now.
  • The Unique Eocene Flint Terroir ("ES-56"): Formerly bottled as La Bourgeoise, this cuvée was renamed ES-56 as a tribute to its remarkable soil—Eocene Flint formed 56 million years ago in the village of Saint-Satur. This rare flintstone slope gives old-vine Sauvignon Blanc its signature gunflint perfume and smoky, mineral drive.
  • Artisanal Vinification at Famille Bourgeois: Sourced from old vines, part of the wine is fermented in thermo-regulated stainless steel while part ferments in Tronçais oak barrels. Aged on fine lees for 12 months with regular batonnage, it gains subtle texture and depth without masking its razor-sharp flinty character.

Highlights

  • 100% Sauvignon Blanc harvested from old vines grown on Eocene flint slopes in Saint-Satur, Sancerre.
  • A radiant 2023 release combining energetic citrus, peach pit aromatics, and gunflint minerality.
  • Crafted by the historic Famille Bourgeois, one of the premier winemaking families in the Loire Valley.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Pale golden-yellow with brilliant bright reflections.
  • Nose: Intensely flinty and aromatic. It opens with notes of lemon zest, peach pits, and white flowers, accompanied by nuances of gunflint, nutmeg, and subtle oak spice.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and beautifully compact. The entry brings a wave of ripe citrus and stone fruit sap that glides into a chiseled, mineral-driven finish with lingering smoky flint.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 11–13°C to allow its fine oak texture and rich flinty aromatics to open fully.
  • Decanting: A short 15-to-20 minute decant allows the gunflint aromatics to uncoil. Enjoy now through 2031+.
  • Western Pairing: Grilled sea bass, roasted poultry, pan-seared scallops with lemon butter, or aged Crottin de Chavignol goat cheese.
  • Asian Pairing: Steamed whole fish with ginger and spring onions, butter-braised king prawns, or fresh Vietnamese spring rolls.
