Toasted Brioche, Candied Citrus, Chalky Tension, and Twelve Years of Grand Cru Radiance

The 2006 Champagne Henriot "Cuvée Hemera" Brut is a prestigious prestige cuvée crafted exclusively from six founding Grand Cru villages. Named after the Greek goddess of daylight, it reveals luminous aromas of baked yellow apples, candied lemon peel, toasted hazelnuts, and warm brioche. Medium-to-full-bodied and vinous, it balances rich, mature autolytic depth with a fine, creamy mousse and persistent chalky salinity, finishing long, aristocratic, and remarkably fresh.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 93 pts
James Suckling 94 pts
  • 93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: Henriot's newly released 2006 Brut Cuvée Hemera is showing very nicely, offering up aromas of wheat toast, crisp stone fruit, dried white flowers, smoke and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with a generous core of fruit, bright acids and a pretty pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a mouthwateringly sapid finish. The cuvée's rather reductive style marries well with the inherent opulence of the vintage, and it marks a notable step up over the inaugural 2005 in depth and concentration.
  • 94 Points - James Suckling: Mature and generous nose of baked raspberries, figs, cocoa, honeycomb, marmalade, praline and apricot pie. It’s medium-to full-bodied with vibrant acidity and very creamy bubbles. Saline undertones with lovely salted-caramel notes. Expansive. Equal blend of Grand Cru pinot noir and chardonnay. 5g/l dosage. Drink now or hold.
  • The Six Founding Grand Crus: Replacing the historic "Cuvée des Enchanteleurs," Hemera is composed of equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (50/50) sourced strictly from Henriot’s six founding Grand Cru terroirs: Avize, Chouilly, and Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs, combined with Mailly, Verzy, and Verzenay on the Montagne de Reims.
  • Extended Maturation in Historic Crayères: Bottled and left to mature on its gross lees for more than 12 years deep inside Henriot's Gallo-Roman chalk cellars (*crayères*) in Reims. Finished with an extra-brut level dosage of approximately 5 g/L, this slow elevage achieves harmonious autolytic richness while preserving the crisp, crystalline purity of the Grand Cru limestone soils.

Highlights

  • Prestige flagship cuvée composed of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir exclusively from six Grand Crus.
  • Aged for over 12 years on the lees in Henriot’s underground Gallo-Roman chalk cellars.
  • A generous, luminous 2006 vintage; in a magnificent drinking window through 2036+.

Tasting Notes

Bright golden-yellow with shimmering amber highlights and an ultrafine bead, it opens with complex aromas of baked yellow orchard fruit, candied lemon peel, and roasted hazelnuts, layered with toasted brioche, white blossom, and delicate white truffle. The palate is medium-bodied, vinous, and creamy, seamlessly balancing opulent autolytic pastry notes against an energetic spine of chalky acidity, leading into an expansive, crystalline, and delicately saline finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 10–12°C in a wide tulip or standard white wine glass to let the complex bouquet breathe.
  • Decanting: Decanting is not required, though giving the wine 10 to 15 minutes in the glass allows its multi-layered autolytic depth to unfurl. Best enjoyed now through 2036+.
