This is a selection of pinot noir from top parcels in Verzenay, averaging 25 years of age, and blended with one-third chardonnay from 45-year old vines in Le Mesnil. The pinot fruit is vinous and intense, with a subtle dimension and fragrant complexity, and the chardonnay seems to amplify the presence of the pinot more than adding character of its own. The Mesnil character asserts itself in the texture, however, creating a noticeably fine and silky feel, and it contributes a firm backbone of acidity that carries the aromas through a long and resonant finish. It’s very expressive, with a strong personality, and it will undoubtedly gain more complexity and depth with further age. Last tasted: 10/08
