Green Apples, Lemon Zest, Crushed Volcanic Rock, and High-Altitude Etna Tension

The 2022 Planeta "Eruzione 1614" Carricante is a crystalline, mineral-driven white cultivated at 850 meters on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. Sourced from volcanic soils near the historic 1614 lava flows, it unfurls aromas of crisp green apples, white peach, wild chamomile, and flint. Medium-bodied and chiseled, it balances ripe citrus fruit against fine lees texture and electric volcanic acidity, finishing with intense salinity and persistence.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 94 pts
  • 94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The organic Planeta 2023 Sicilia Carricante Eruzione 1614 is made with 100% Carricante from the Sciaranuova vineyard, planted between 815 and 855 meters in elevation. The wine is bright and citrusy, with green apple, pulverized volcanic stone and a saline edge. Its linear acidity and subtle pithiness give the wine a chiseled, tensile finish. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, where the wine remains on the fine lees until August. This is a 15,000-bottle release.
  • The Sciaranuova Volcanic Terroir: Sourced from estate vineyards in Contrada Sciaranuova on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, planted at an altitude of approximately 850 meters. The terroir is composed of loose black volcanic sand and stratified basalt gravel born from the historic 1614 eruption. At this extreme elevation, extreme diurnal shifts and volcanic soils grant Carricante intense aromatic focus, high malic acid levels, and distinctive mineral salinity.
  • Native Carricante & Riesling Touch: Crafted primarily from native Carricante (approx. 90%) blended with a subtle 10% touch of Riesling Renano planted on the volcano. Vinified under strict temperature control, the grapes undergo cold settling and fermentation, followed by approximately 6 months on fine lees with regular stirring in stainless steel and neutral tonneaux, preserving sheer volcanic clarity and tensile texture.

Highlights

  • Roughly 90% Carricante and 10% Riesling grown at 850m elevation on Mount Etna.
  • Aged on fine lees primarily in stainless steel to showcase pure volcanic energy and citrus drive.
  • From the crisp, tensile 2022 vintage; prime drinking window now through 2032+.

Tasting Notes

Pale straw-yellow with luminous green reflections, it opens with pure, crystalline aromas of granny smith apple, lemon peel, and white peach, intertwined with wild chamomile, Mediterranean thyme, wet basalt, and crushed flint stone. The palate is medium-bodied, linear, and tense, carrying vibrant citrus and orchard fruit along a spine of laser-sharp natural acidity, concluding on a persistent, mouth-watering, and distinctly saline volcanic finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve chilled at 10–12°C in standard white wine or Burgundy stems.
  • Decanting: A brief 15-to-20 minute aeration in the glass allows its flinty reduction and citrus aromatics to fully blossom. Best enjoyed from now through 2032+.
