Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 97 pts
Wine Advocate 98 pts
- 98 Points - James Suckling: Aromas of roses and other flowers with a deep fruit intensity. Full-bodied, dense and ultra-fine with a beautiful texture. Lots of new wood now but this will amalgamate with time into the wine. Fabulous potential. Drink or hold.
- 98 Points - Monica Larner (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): This is a deeply communicative and articulate wine that boasts immense power and persistence. The 2010 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Lodoletta is a creation of enormous beauty and unflinching intensity. The wine speaks at loud volumes with black cherry, spice, tarry smoke, barbecue marinade and grilled rosemary. Those balsam notes add length and continuity to the bouquet. In the mouth, the wine is complete and penetrating. It wraps thickly over the palate to soothe and entice your taste buds. Yet there is enough crispness to keep it from feeling cloying or too heavy. There is a point of tannic astringency on the finish that will accompany this wine over the next decade of its aging evolution. For that reason, it's best to wait before popping the cork on this memorable vinous experience.
- The Unique Monte Lodoletta Terroir: Located in Illasi, eastern Valpolicella, the Monte Lodoletta vineyard features rich alluvial gravelly-clay soils. The microclimate produces grapes with immense skin-to-juice ratio and natural concentration, setting it apart from traditional Valpolicella sites.
- Uncompromising Appassimento Perfection: Romano Dal Forno is legendary for his perfectionist approach. Grapes (Rondinella, Corvina, Oseleta, and Croatina) are hand-selected and dried for up to three months before slow fermentation and 36 months aging in 100% new oak barriques, resulting in a world-class wine capable of cellaring for decades.
Highlights
- A masterclass blend of Corvina, Rondinella, Oseleta, and Croatina dried via traditional appassimento.
- A majestic 2010 vintage offering dark berries, espresso, dark chocolate, tar, and velvety power.
- Crafted by the legendary Dal Forno Romano estate, boasting 30+ years of cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Opaque, near-black ruby with deep garnet highlights at the rim.
- Nose: Intensely complex, brooding, and expansive. It opens with aromas of crème de cassis, dried figs, and blackberry liqueur, layered with roasted espresso beans, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, tar, and crushed granite.
- Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and monumental. The entry brings a dense wave of concentrated dark fruit sap that glides across massive, ultra-polished tannins, supported by fresh acidity and concluding with an extraordinarily long finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 16–18°C to allow its incredible aromatics and dense texture to unfold seamlessly.
- Decanting: A generous 1-to-2 hour decant is highly recommended to allow this powerhouse to open fully. Cellar-worthy through 2045+.
- Western Pairing: Slow-braised beef short ribs, venison roast, osso buco, or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano and Gorgonzola.
- Asian Pairing: Dongpo braised pork belly, Xinjiang cumin lamb, braised beef brisket, or rich soy-sauce stewed meats.
