Critical Recognition
- 93 Points - James Suckling: Vibrant and lifted aromas of wild blackberries, raspberries, tobacco leaves and ferric earth. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated tannins and focused acidity, giving notes of blackberries, dried herbs and cured meat. Fresh with a savory undertone. A blend of 48% grenache, 28% mataro, 13% carignan, 6% counoise and 5% shiraz. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
- 92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2023 Cuvee Juveniles is a blend of 48% Grenache, 28% Mataro, 13% Carignan, 6% Counoise and 5% Shiraz, and like the Cuvee Juveniles Blanc, is named after the wine bar for which it was created, Juveniles Wine Bar in the 1st arrondissement in Paris. The wine is savory and fresh, perfumed with abundant red fruits, flowers and exotic spices. In the mouth, you get star anise, fennel seeds, black peppercorns and fresh blood, and the mouthfeel is shaped by ferruginous tannins. While this wine may not be as complex as some others in the lineup, it lacks nothing in the way of freshness, personality and detail. It's a beautiful wine, from a cool and wet season in the Barossa. 15% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
Highlights
- Classic Rhône-style blend predominantly composed of Grenache, co-fermented and blended with Shiraz and Mataro (Mourvèdre) sourced from mature Barossa Valley bush vines.
- Conceived in 1999 at the request of Mark Williamson, proprietor of the celebrated Paris wine bistro Juveniles, who wanted a fresh, unwooded red celebrating bistro conviviality.
- Grown on low-yielding ancient soils across Ebenezer, Seppeltsfield, and Greenock, yielding natural concentration without heaviness.
- Completely unoaked: vinified and held exclusively in stainless steel tanks to emphasize pure primary fruit expression, lifted spice, and textural transparency.
- From the long, balanced 2023 Barossa harvest; offers irresistible youthful charm with the stamina to drink well through 2030+.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby-purple with vivid violet edges, it opens with pure, exuberant aromas of ripe raspberries, macerated black cherries, and wild strawberries, layered with cracked white pepper, lavender, dried thyme, and subtle licorice. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, juicy, and energetic, coating the mouth in bright red fruit that dances across fine, supple tannins and lively natural acidity, culminating in a clean, savory, and refreshingly persistent finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 15–17°C in generous universal red or Syrah glassware.
- Decanting: Ready to drink upon opening; brief aeration in the glass allows its peppery floral aromatics and red berry brightness to fully expand. Best enjoyed now through 2030+.
