Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- 96 Points – James Suckling: "A tight and powerful red with lots of blueberries, burnt orange peel and violets. Multifaceted. Full body, long, polished tannins and a fresh and vivid finish. Drink or hold."
- The Terroir Series Revolution: With over 130 years of pedigree, Bodegas Trapiche is a historic titan of Argentinian viticulture. Under the direction of star winemaker Daniel Pi, the *Terroir Series* was created to give ultimate credit to independent premium growers. Each year, the winemaking team micro-selects the top three exceptional vineyards across Mendoza to bottle separately under the grower’s name. Sourced from Fausto Orellana's spectacular 60+ year-old vines situated at an elevated 990 meters, this release showcases the incredible concentration and complex herbal freshness that only ancient, low-yielding Malbec can manifest.
Highlights
- 100% Malbec harvested exclusively from the single vineyard Finca Orellana in La Consulta, Valle de Uco, showcasing pristine vine maturity.
- Grown at a high altitude of 990 meters above sea level on old river sediments, where cold mountain nights preserve remarkable natural acidity.
- Fermented in small concrete vats, aged for 18 months in 100% brand-new French oak barrels, and further aged for a minimum of 12 months in bottle before its primary release.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep garnet-red with intense ink-like centers.
- Nose: Intensely fragrant, complex, and savory, unfurling with aromas of morello cherry, currant, and blackberry confit, masterfully laced with sweet tobacco, crushed violet petals, dark chocolate mocha, and an intense balsamic hint of fresh mint.
- Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and beautifully broad. A sweet, ample wave of concentrated dark forest fruit syrup strikes the entry, completely balanced by a juicy vein of mountain acidity. The mid-palate texture is velvety, deep, and heavily layered with hints of licorice and leather, supported by soft, fully integrated wood tannins that glide into a long, persistent, and smoky finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at room temperature between 16–18°C. Keeping it slightly cool frames its dense fruit concentration and highlights the fresh balsamic mint undertones.
- Decanting: As a mature 2015 vintage that has perfectly integrated its tannins and oak, a 30-minute decant is highly recommended to allow the complex bouquet of leather, tobacco, and dark fruit to open up completely. Drinking at its absolute peak right now.
- Western Pairing: Prime grain-fed ribeye steak, roasted rack of lamb with rosemary, braised beef short ribs, or rich venison stews.
- Asian Pairing: 柱侯牛腩煲 (Braised Beef Brisket and Tendon Pot), 椒鹽排骨 (Salt and Pepper Spare Ribs), or Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup (紅燒牛肉麵).
