Black Raspberry, Sweet Spice, and Historic Lodi Old-Vine Soul

The 2023 Turley "Dogtown Vineyard" Lodi Zinfandel is a deeply satisfying, fragrant, and lush single-vineyard red wine from one of Lodi’s premier heritage sites. Sourced from own-rooted, dry-farmed vines planted in 1944 on unique volcanic clay soils, it balances classic Lodi generosity with vibrant acidity. Enticing aromas of ripe black raspberry, dark cherry, warm baking spices, cocoa, and sweet earth open into a medium-to-full-bodied palate with a supple, velvety texture and a long, energetic finish.

Terroir & Winemaking

  • The Unique Dogtown Soil & History: Planted in 1944, Dogtown Vineyard is located in the Clements Hills sub-appellation of Lodi. Unlike the sandy soils common across Lodi, Dogtown features rolling hills of clay loam peppered with volcanic gravel. These own-rooted, dry-farmed vines produce smaller berries with outstanding natural acidity and distinctive structural backbone.
  • Turley’s Organic Craftsmanship: Farmed organically and vinified with ambient wild yeasts. Turley ages the wine in low-impact oak barrels to highlight the natural dark fruit, warm spice, and soil character of this historic vineyard without heavy-handed wood influence.

Highlights

  • 100% Zinfandel sourced from own-rooted, dry-farmed old vines planted in 1944 in Lodi's Clements Hills.
  • A radiant 2023 release bursting with black raspberry, dark plum, baking spices, and savory clay-earth minerality.
  • Crafted by Turley Wine Cellars, showcasing one of Lodi’s most compelling and age-worthy single-vineyard expressions.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep garnet-ruby with vibrant crimson reflections at the rim.
  • Nose: Fragrant, warm, and inviting. It opens with aromas of ripe black raspberries, dark cherries, and plum preserves, accompanied by sweet baking spices, cocoa powder, savory dried herbs, and a touch of terracotta earth.
  • Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and deliciously smooth. The entry brings a plush wave of juicy black berry sap that glides across supple, velvety tannins, supported by fresh natural acidity and a long, spiced finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 15–17°C to highlight its bright berry fruit and spicy aromatics.
  • Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute decant helps unlock its aromatics. Best enjoyed over the next 8 to 12 years.
  • Western Pairing: Barbecued pork ribs, grilled tri-tip steak, slow-cooked pulled pork, or gourmet beef burgers.
  • Asian Pairing: Korean bulgogi, Taiwanese braised pork, Xinjiang cumin lamb, or wok-fried black pepper beef.
