From Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in France's Alsace region, the Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann 2001 is a refined 100% Pinot Gris sourced from the Clos Saint Urbain monopole within the steep, south-facing Rangen Grand Cru vineyard at Thann, at 250-350 meters elevation on compacted volcanic ash (grauwacke) soils that impart intense minerality and structure. Hand-harvested grapes from the balanced 2001 vintage—characterized by cool, wet conditions yielding concentrated, ripe fruit—undergo extended pressing, natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts in old oak barrels, and lees aging to enhance complexity and terroir expression. As a biodynamic pioneer since 2000 under Olivier Humbrecht, this production yields a deep golden wine with remarkable depth and longevity.

Tasting Notes An elegant, mature white with concentrated dried fruit and smoky minerality, reflecting Alsace's volcanic terroir. The nose reveals popcorn, candied apricot, dates, and hints of tobacco, leather, and mace. On the palate, it is full-bodied and balanced, with vibrant acidity, velvety texture, and flavors of honeyed pear, baked celery, and earthy graphite, leading to a long, spicy finish.

Awards and Accolades The 2001 Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann earned 92 points from Vinous for its baroque complexity and masculine structure.

Serving and Cellaring Serve at 12-14°C with 45-60 minutes of decanting to unfold aromas. Ideal with foie gras, roasted poultry, or blue cheeses. Enjoy now through 2035, during which it will develop profound tertiary nuances.
