From Clau de Nell in France's Anjou subregion, the Cuvée Violette 2019 is a refined blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from 45-60-year-old vines on silty-clay soils with sandstone grit and red flint over tuffeau limestone, imparting vibrant structure and minerality. Hand-harvested grapes from the balanced 2019 vintage—characterized by warm, dry conditions yielding concentrated yet elegant fruit—undergo natural fermentation in the domaine's historic cellars, followed by aging in neutral vessels to preserve purity and terroir expression. As a biodynamic, Demeter-certified family estate revitalized by Anne-Claude Leflaive and Christian Jacques since 2008, this production yields a deep ruby wine with garnet edges and remarkable poise.
Tasting Notes An elegant, perfumed red with vibrant dark berries and floral spice, reflecting Anjou's tuffeau limestone terroir. The nose reveals black cherry, violet, graphite, and hints of licorice and damp earth. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and light-footed, with fine tannins, bright acidity, and flavors of red plum, blackcurrant, and subtle smoke, leading to a pristine, juicy finish.
Awards and Accolades The 2019 Cuvée Violette earned 93 points from James Suckling for its vivid succulence and authentic savory touch.
Serving and Cellaring Serve at 14-16°C with 30-45 minutes of decanting to enhance aromas. Ideal with grilled lamb, charcuterie, or mushroom dishes. Enjoy now through 2035, developing greater earthy and spice nuances over time.
